DENTDALE W.I. MEETING
WEDNESDAY 11th MAY 2016
DENT MEMORIAL HALL
Our meeting opened with everyone singing Jerusalem followed by a warm welcome to all from President Marion Feltham and a ‘thank you’ our pianist Rita Corpe.
The minutes of the meeting held on Wednesday 13th April 2016 were read by Thelma Belfield then approved and signed as a true record.
Copies of the two Resolutions were available to enable members to consider their decision prior to voting. A vote was taken by a show of hands and was carried in favour of ’Appropriate Care in Hospital for Dementia Patients’. Kate Cairns will take this forward to the National AGM in June.
Fund Raising – Manna House
There are a few Smarties’ tubes still available for any members who have not already received one. We have until the September meeting to fill the empty tubes with coins.
The Potting Shed Café at Bay View Garden Centre in Bolton-le-Sands is the venue on Thursday 12th May, Members wishing to go should add their names to the list on the table.
Four potential venues have been nominated. Newby Hall, Raby Castle, Leighton Hall or Skipton and members were asked to indicate their preference from the information and the list on the table.
The group have completed the Group meeting competition model Lamb and Marion introduced us to ‘Brian the Lamb’ The group continue to meet on most Monday mornings and anyone interested in crafting is welcome to come along and ‘have a go’.
Group Meeting 16th May
Tickets are still available costing £4 (supper included) Donald and Christine Marston of ‘Lambing Live’ fame will be the guest speakers.
Marion reminded everyone that the closing date for orders is 2nd June and catalogues/order forms
were on the table.
Ideas and suggestions for next year’s programme are being sought and a list was on the table.
Cumberland- Westmorland Federation Business
Pennies for Friendship ACWW
Marion reminded us that the end of July is when we send our cheque to ACWW for the monies we have collected throughout the year. Recently we have received two donations of coins from non-WI members to add to our annual collection which will help swell our contribution this year.
Final orders were being taken for tickets, the concessionary cost is £10.75p.
HM Queen Elizabeth’s 90th Birthday Celebration Dinner
Six members have booked to attend this event in July.
New Speakers presentation 28th June 2016
Sue Owen our Programme Secretary is going to this meeting and Marion asked if anyone wished to go along with her.
Denman Bursaries applications
Five applications are available to members who have not been to Denman previously. One is specifically for a Cookery course and the remaining four for any type of course. Application forms are on the table.
Nominations for Federation Trustees
CWFWI are seeking members from all WI’s who are interested in becoming Federation trustees and application forms are on the table. The current board of trustees willing to stand will be supported by a blanket nomination from our WI.
National Federation Business
A formal appeal has been launched to help with the financial difficulties. The proposal is for WI’s to ask each member to donate £10 to the fund over a two year period. Details were on the table. The ‘Friends of Denman’ donation scheme currently costing £75 per annum is also available.
NFWI Open Days
The opportunity to visit the NFWI office in London on 30 November/1 December or 7/8th December is open to all members and application forms are on the table
The NFWI require all WI’s to have a formal complaints procedure and a copy of this will be on the table should the need arise. Marion expressed the hope that should any member be unhappy with any aspect of WI matters this could be dealt without a formal process.
Bake a cake – Country fest Competition sponsored by the Aga Shop
Details of this competition are on the table with more classes being available than last year.
Marion thanked Monica Cleasby and Lynn Comrie our hostesses for the evening and confirmed that next month it would be Sheila Richards and Cathy Traynor.
Thelma asked members to notify a committee member of the change to their appointed date for hostessing to avoid confusion when planning the meetings.
Marion then went on to introduce Marilyn Hale who had previously demonstrated her Encaustic Art work. On this occasion she demonstrated and talked about the art of Glass Fusion ending her presentation by supporting us all to make a pendant or brooch from glass. The finished items will be returned to us after having been processed in Marilyn’s kiln. Everyone enjoyed the ‘hands on’ activity and Marilyn was thanked by Sheila Richards for her informative and interesting talk.
The competition was won by Sheila with Catherine in second place and the raffle prizes by Sheila, Pat, Jen and Marion
Our evening ended with tea and Marjorie’s delicious homemade Biscuits.
